Reading Incentive Programs

Using the motto "Everyone Reads ~ Everyone Wins",
Thurmont Middle School provides two incentive programs to encourage reading:

The Thurmont Reading Hall of Fame is unique to our school. All students have the opportunity to keep a log of all books read. For every 10 books read and recorded, a student earns a $5 coupon toward a book of their choice at one of our 2 Scholastic Book Fairs, one in November and one in April. This program is made possible by the generosity of our TMS PTA.

The MD Black-Eyed Susan Reading Program is a state-wide program open to all MD students, in both public and private schools. It is a student-choice award, meaning that each of a year's 4 winners are chosen by student vote. In April, 2009, more than 70,000 MD students voted.

In order to vote, a student must read and respond to at least 3 of the books in a category.
There are 4 contests: Picture Book, Grades 4-6, Grades 6-9 and High School. This year all TMS students again have the opportunity to read in both the Grades 4-6 and Grades 6-9 contests. A selected class is also participating in the Picture Book contest.

Our Media Specialist, Mrs. Crawford, is one of a 12-member committee who select the nominess for the Grade 6-9 category. The Committee reads about 100 books each year to determine the 10 Finalists.
